Additional info/contents	Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) composed his opera "The Night Before Christmas" in 1894/95. The premiere took place on December 10, 1895 in St. Petersburg. The libretto for the opera was written by Rimsky-Korsakov himself and is based on a story by Nikolai Gogol, which Pyotr Tchaikovsky had already used as the basis for an opera a few years earlier. The opera is about Vakula, the blacksmith of a small Ukrainian village. He is madly in love with Oksana; however, as proof of his love, she demands a more than unusual Christmas present: the tsarina's magnificent slippers. Knowing full well that under normal circumstances he has no way of fulfilling Oksana's wish, Vakula seeks supernatural help and finds it in the form of the devil, whom he tricks into helping him. The devil carries Vakula on his back to St. Petersburg, where he has the opportunity to present his request to the tsarina during a lavish reception at the court. The tsarina actually grants Vakula's request and gives him her slippers. He then returns to his home village. There he is now thought to be dead, which plunges Oxana into deep sadness, as she has now realized that she also truly loves Vakula. In the end, however, all misunderstandings and adversities are resolved: Oxana receives her extravagant gift, the lovers find each other, and the church bell calls the villagers to the Christmas service. The brilliant polonaise is played in the third act of the opera for the appearance of the tsarina, whose appearance can already be anticipated in the prelude by the fanfare motifs. The music is a sonorous reflection of the solemn atmosphere and the magnificent scenery at the Tsar's court in St. Petersburg, which Rimsky-Korsakov conjures up in his opera, and can also be played outside of the Advent and Christmas seasons, for example as the opening piece of a festive concert.
