Additional info/contents Edo is the former name for the city of Tokyo. Inspired by a series of woodblock prints by the artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 1858) entitled "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo", Cesarini's symphony is based on some traditional Japanese melodies. The composition is divided into five movements in arch form, i.e. a symmetrical structure in which the individual sections are arranged symmetrically around a centre. Each movement has a title from a print from the "One Hundred Famous Views".

1. The Pagoda of Zojoji Temple
2. The City Flourishing
3. Temple Gardens at Nippori
4. Cherry Blossoms Along the Tama River
5. Senju Great Bridge

Programme notes *: additional text

The 100 famous views of Edo is a series of colour woodblock prints by the Japanese painter and colour woodblock artist Utagawa Hiroshige. The series, which contrary to the wording of the title consists of a total of 119 prints and one title page, is considered the artist's main work. He himself described the prints in this series as his best work, which was to be his artistic legacy.

In 1829-36, an illustrated guide "Pictures of Famous Places of Edo" was published which had been started by Saitō Yukio (1737-1799) in 1790 and revised and completed by his son Yukitaka and grandson Yukinari. The total of 20 volumes of the seven-volume guide was accurately illustrated by Hasegawa Settan (1778-1848). Pictures and text describe in detail the great temples and shrines, but also a whole series of famous shops, teahouses, restaurants etc.. In addition, there are landscapes and picturesque parts of the city and its surroundings.

Hiroshige, who took a number of motifs from this guide in his 100 famous views, depicted not only Edo but also its surroundings in individual woodblock prints. Roughly estimated, about half of the prints concern the city itself, the smaller half the surrounding area. But the city also appears very green in Hiroshige's prints, criss-crossed by many rivers and canals. The endless uniform sea of houses, however, would also have been rather boring.
