Die im Zusammenhang mit der Wiederaufführung der Matthäuspassion besonders intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk Bachs führte zu einer Reihe von Kantaten über bekannte Cho-ralweisen für Chor, Instrumente und manchmal auch Soli. Nicht nur für Kantatengottesdienste stellen sie eine grosse Bereicherung dar.
