Die im Zusammenhang mit der Wiederaufführung der Matthäuspassion besonders intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk Bachs führte zu einer Reihe von Kantaten über bekannte Choralweisen für Chor, Instrumente und manchmal auch Soli. Nicht nur für Kantatengottesdienste stellen sie eine grosse Bereicherung dar.
