The composer was inspired by the book of the same name by Ulrike Scheikert to this composition. The story tells of a dark chapter of the Middle Ages: the witch hunts. Twin girls were born in Ellwangen (Germany) in 1588 to a respected host family. While the virtuous Helena enters a monastery, her headstrong twin sister Sibylla becomes a midwife. She learns the dark secrets of the powerful and becomes a danger. The Inquisition bailiffs are preparing for the witch hunt.

The historical novel by Ulrike Schweikert "The witch and the saint" is based on the witch hunt at the end of the 16th century, especially in the German city of Ellwangen. On the basis of historical traditions Ulrike Schweikert makes it her business in this book to revive the medieval world around Ellwangen, a world in which the pyres burned almost daily and more than half of the female population of Ellwangen found death in fire.

The twins Sibylla and Helena are born in a respected merchant family, and the mere fact that they are twins worries and frightens the superstitious population of Ellwangen. In order to prevent germinating talk and to convince the people of a Christian education of the two, the mother decides to give Helena at the age of 5 years into the care of a monastery. But even without her sister life doesn't get easier for Sibylla and so she leaves Ellwangen a few years later. The girl is apprenticed to a midwife in Leonberg and soon becomes her most talented pupil. Only as a young woman does her way lead her back to Ellwangen, as she sees in her dreams how her mother is burned as a witch. When she arrives there, she is not exactly welcomed with open arms. Not only did her premonitions prove to be true, but her family's accusations of guilt also cause her trouble. The fate of a young, red-haired midwife, the daughter of a convicted witch who allegedly eats babies for breakfast and rides out at night with a broom, seems to be sealed in a town like Ellwangen.

Meanwhile, far from Ellwangen, Helena also has visions of similar dreams that come true. By believing the abbess that Helena has the gift to speak to God, Helena attains the status of a saint.

One tortured, the other worshipped. The one has courted the devil, while the other has only spoken God's word. "THE WITCH AND THE HOLY"
