Composer Del Borgo, Elliot
Difficulty level 2
Evaluation level of countries D1 (German entry level)
Duration 3:03
Additional info/contents When one sees the name of Elliot Del Borgo, it is immediately associated with concert band music of the highest order. "Dervish Dance" is no exception. Even though the piece is speedy, the notes lay well under the fingers, and it sounds much more difficult than it is.

Here is an energetic dance set in the Dorian mode (natural minor), which gives it the Middle Eastern flavor. The opening section can be played as fast as possible followed by a contrasting slow section. The closing is a powerful depiction of the famed "Whirling Dervish."

The term Derwisch refers, especially in European languages, to a Sufi, a member of a Muslim ascetic-religious order (tariqa), which is generally known for its modesty and discipline. Dervishes practice Sufism and are considered a source of wisdom, healing, poetry, enlightenment and wisdom. For example, Nasreddin became a legend in the Orient, not only for Muslims. The ecstatic trance dance (sema) practiced in the Mevlevi Order of Turkey is considered one of the physical methods of falling into religious ecstasy (majdhb, fana) and coming in contact with Allah (see also dhikr).
