Additional info/contents I. Albi
Initiated by Bernard de Castenet (1240-1317) on August 15 1282 construction commenced of the characteristic Sainte-Cécile in Albi. This cathedral has a peculiar appearance; it is built from red bricks. Because of the feebleness of these bricks salient angles were avoided and many round shapes were used. Build on a steep hill, having no forefront and with only one tower, makes this Saint-Cécile a unique creation.

II. Chartres
The Notre-Dame of Chartres, designed by an unknown architect, contains over 8000 statues! It is known for its two outstanding towers, but even more so because of its truly unique glass paintings. In these glass pictures (3889) mainly the colours red, green and sky-blue were used. In the "new tower” the bells are suspended, amongst others the Bourbon from the year 1520, weighing 5 tons. It can be heard in this part of the composition.

III. Amiens
In 1220 the first stone was laid of the biggest (7700 m2) Gothic cathedral of Europe; the Notre-Dame from Amiens. This cathedral is a highlight of Picardic architecture and is world famous because of its asymmetrical towers of uneven height. On top of the central porch is a statue of a blessing Christ, that is known as the "Beau Dieu” from Amiens. This unique masterpiece radiates a great form of serenity. Furthermore, the choir seats are the most beautiful and unique wood-carving of France.

Charles Michiels was inspired by these magnificent cathedrals and attempts to capture the marvelous beauty of these buildings in this piece.

Story about the cathedrals of Albi, Chartres and Amiens

I. Albi Cathedral:
The Sainte Cécile Cathedral in Albi, France, is an impressive example of medieval architecture and an outstanding monument of Gothic architecture. Construction of the cathedral began in 1282 under the direction of Bernard de Castanet, Bishop of Albi, who laid the foundation stone on August 15, 1282. A notable feature of the cathedral is its use of red bricks, which give it a distinctive look. Due to the brittleness of these bricks, projecting corners were avoided and many rounded shapes were used. Built on a stone slope and with no facade but only a tower, the Sainte Cécile Cathedral is a unique architectural masterpiece.

II. Chartres Cathedral:
The Notre-Dame Cathedral of Chartres in Chartres, France, is one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The construction of the cathedral began in the 12th century and was completed in the 13th century. The cathedral is known for its striking towers and especially for its unique stained glass windows, some of which are over 800 years old. These windows primarily use the colors red, green and sky blue and are famous for their beauty and complexity. The cathedral also houses a variety of statues, some depicting religious scenes. The bells hang in the new tower of the cathedral, including the deep church bell from 1520, whose sound is an integral part of the composition of the church bells.

III. Amiens Cathedral:
The Notre-Dame Cathedral of Amiens in Amiens, France, is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe and a masterpiece of Picardy architecture. The cathedral's foundation stone was laid in 1220 and construction took more than fifty years. The cathedral is famous for its two asymmetrical towers of unequal height, which give it a striking look. Above the main portal is an image of Christ blessing, known as the "Beau Dieu" of Amiens, which is a unique masterpiece of medieval sculpture. The cathedral also houses magnificent choir stalls, considered the most beautiful and unique carved ensemble in all of France.

Overall, the cathedrals of Albi, Chartres and Amiens are outstanding examples of medieval architecture and art in France, attracting visitors from around the world who come to admire their impressive beauty and cultural significance.
