In this "Irish rhapsody" the composer draws from the wealth of Irish folk music, and he connects three well-known melodies to form an attractive whole. In the 80's, the first melody, Brian Borus's March, was world famous in a performance by top flutist James Galway. For this work, the march has been given a refreshing touchup; in the light of the Irish folk music tradition, it is no surprise that drums and flutes play an important role here. Then follows the beautiful melody of the The Minstrel Man, atmospherically played by various instruments, and outlined by a sober but striking harmonization. As a "showstopper", there's the lively dance rhythmof the song The Irish Washerwoman in the six eight meter that is so typical of a lot of Irish music. The exciting and cheerful finale closes our musical visit to the endlessly green island were music and sociability are inextricably bound together.
