Additional info/contents Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band "Pershings Own", led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier.

Washington D.C. has some of the world's most famous buildings, monuments and statues. Philip Sparke took three of these as inspiration for this piece. For example, he describes the grandeur of the "Lincoln Memorial", with its Doric columns built in the shape of a Greek temple. The "Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial" recalls Martin Luther King's legendary speech "I have a dream". The reverent yet powerful music is a tribute to this speech. The statue "Encore" commemorates the world-famous African-American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. In this final movement, Philip Sparke captures the virtuosic, energetic and unique dynamics of Duke Ellington's music.

1. The Lincoln Memorial
2. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
3. Duke Ellington "Encore"
