Additional info/contents Jericho is the musical translation of the well-known story from the book of Joshua about the capture of the city of Jericho by the Israelites. Part 1 depicts the cruel journey through the desert to Canaan, the promised land. An emotional lamentation for the yearning for a home, for the end of a roaming existence. The capture of Jericho is the theme of part 2.

The city cannot be captured immediately and Jehovah orders an impressive army to march around the city for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and the priests blew their trumpets and the people cried so loud that the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. The Jews stormed the city and drove the inhabitants away. The music clearly reveals the marching army and you can hear the walls falling down with a tremendous noise. However, there is quite some artistic freedom in the actual story.A majestic and grand melody subsequently evokes the triumphant emotions that emerged as the fortified city fell (part 3). Following a personal and romantic interpretation, the scene ultimately ends in a typical Jewish feast (part 4) whereby the virtuosity of melodies played by the woodwinds and the passionate rhythms refer to traditional Jewish music. All themes are repeated in this last part in various forms, often simultaneous and in duelling counterpoint. The piece ends with fragments from the main theme of part 1 in major: peace and quiet return at last.

The city of Jericho plays an important role in the Book of Joshua in the Old Testament and is particularly known for the remarkable event of the fall of the city walls, which is closely linked to music and sound. This biblical event impressively illustrates the power of music and sound in a religious and historical context.

In the Book of Joshua, Joshua, the successor of Moses, received instructions from God to conquer the city of Jericho. The strategy that God revealed to Joshua was unusual and strongly influenced by musical elements. Joshua was ordered to have seven priests with seven ram's horns march in front of the Ark of the Covenant. The priests were to march around the city once a day and blow their horns. On the seventh day they were to do this seven times. These ram's horns, also called shofar, had deep roots in Jewish tradition. The shofar was often used as a signaling instrument to announce important events or to call meetings. In this case, the shofar not only served as an instrument of proclamation, but also had symbolic and divine significance.

After the priests had marched around the city seven times on the seventh day and blown their horns, Joshua commanded the people to shout loudly. The combined sound of the horns and the Israelites' loud cries caused the walls of Jericho to collapse, opening the way for the Israelites to conquer the city. This story illustrates several aspects of the symbolic and practical significance of music and sound in the biblical tradition.

First, the musical instruments, particularly the shofars, functioned as tools of divine power. Their sound became the catalyst for the miracle of the city walls collapsing, demonstrating how music and sound were used as a medium for divine intervention. Second, the coordinated action of the priests blowing horns and the people shouting in unison symbolized the unity and collective faith of the Israelites. This collective musical action reinforced the people's cohesion and spiritual resolve. Third, the ritual use of music in the Jericho story shows how deeply rooted musical practices were in religious ceremonies. The repetition of the ritual over seven days highlights the importance of music in creating sacred time and space.

The capture of Jericho, as described in the book of Joshua, is an outstanding example of how music and sound were used in biblical history not only as a form of expression but also as a powerful tool of divine and human action. This story shows that music in the religious tradition is far more than just an art form; it is a medium of communication, a sign of unity, and an instrument of divine power.
