Additional info/contents May 1944: the school year is ending and a college student leaves school to join the partisan troops settled on the heights of the impenetrable Val Grande. He's only 16 years old. Around his neck he carries the green handkerchief of the Valdossola, in his hand a long 9mm caliber pistol, without ammunition. "Land of Freedom" is a composition inspired by the story of this teenage boy who feels the duty and responsibility to engage in the struggle of liberation against the Nazi-fascist dictatorship. A boy who makes civil commitment a purpose of his own young life. Edo Nolli will survive the sweep of August 29, one of the bloodiest retaliations of the partisan struggle, and then find shelter, after the collapse of the Republic of Valdossola, in Switzerland in the internment camps. He will tell his story, faithful to the principles that enlivened his choice, only 65 years after the tragic events. "Land of Freedom" is a free interpretation of these facts: sometimes lighthearted, sometimes strongly felt, sometimes tragic. A tribute to all those people who have made civil engagement a part of their history, their lives. A civil commitment that, although in a completely different context, I inevitably find in that wonderful world of cultural volunteerism that is the community of wind bands.

The composer dedicates this composition to all these people and especially to the musicians of the brass band of Crevoladossola (conductor James Longo), who commissioned this work to celebrate the 120th anniversary of their institution.

The partisan struggle in Italy during the Second World War stands as a living testimony to the resistance against the fascist dictatorship and the search for freedom and justice. From the early 1940s to the end of the war in 1945, Italy was a theatre of courageous action and sacrifice that brought about the end of oppression.

The fascist dictatorship under Benito Mussolini had plunged the country into a state of fear and oppression. Political opposition was suppressed, freedom of expression repressed and the basic rights of citizens disregarded. Yet even in the darkest times, there were those who refused to bow down and were prepared to fight for their beliefs.

The partisan movement, consisting of a variety of political and social groups, organised itself underground to fight against fascist rule. Men and women from all walks of life joined the partisan forces and fought with determination and courage against the occupiers and their collaborators.

The partisan struggle was characterised by guerrilla tactics, sabotage and the use of asymmetric warfare. The partisans often operated in the remote areas of the mountains and forests, where they could hide from enemy troops and at the same time receive support from the local population.

The collapse of the fascist dictatorship and the liberation of Italy were brought about by a combination of military pressure from the Allies, internal resistance and the partisan struggle. When the Allies landed in southern Italy in 1943 and worked their way northwards, the power of the fascist regime collapsed.

25 April 1945 marked a turning point in Italian history. On this day, the Republic of Salò, the last bastion of fascism, capitulated and Italy entered a new era of freedom and democracy. The partisans had made a decisive contribution to the victory over oppression and laid the foundations for a freer and fairer society.

The partisan struggle in Italy and the collapse of the dictatorship are inextricably linked to the courage, sacrifice and indomitable will of the Italian people to rise up against tyranny and oppression. This period stands as a reminder for the future that the voice of freedom can never be silenced as long as there are people who are prepared to fight for it.
