Lefébure-Wély composed mainly organ works of various sizes, but also three masses, three symphonies, three collections of etudes for piano, a cantata and an opera. Unfortunately, he has almost fallen into oblivion today and is at best known among organists as a source of original organ music. His organ works are characterized by a light and gallant style that combines catchy folk themes (even can-can) or elements of salon music and operetta with French romanticism.
The present concert bolero "Boléro de Concert" is one of his most famous organ compositions and was composed as op. 166 in 1865. The piece is dedicated to his student "Madame la Comtesse BOIS de MOUZILLY". In this composition, Lefébure-Wély combines catchy motifs, concise rhythmics and colorful harmonies to create a fascinating concert piece that is an enrichment for every organist.
The experienced arranger Thorsten Reinau has succeeded in transferring the sound ideal of a French-romantic organ, on which this concert bolero is based, to a large wind orchestra by means of sophisticated sound mixtures. This makes this effective masterpiece by Louis James Alfred Lefébure-Wély accessible to a larger audience, for which the composer Thorsten Reinau would probably be grateful.
