Programme notes *: Silvanus was the Roman god of shepherds and forests. In addition, he was worshipped under the name Silvanus Litoralis as the god of the seashores. He is usually depicted as similar to the Satyrs and Silenes, with a half-goat-shaped body, a head crowned with lilies and a cypress as an attribute. Other depictions show him as a farmer with a vine knife or sickle at a burning altar, accompanied by a dog and with pine cones as an attribute.
