The Miners Rhapsody deals musically with the hardships and efforts that miners take on during their hard work. The miners' song "Glück auf, Glück auf, der Steiger kommt" serves as the musical basis, which is thematically and rhythmically processed in the various sections of the song.
Already in the introduction, the first motif of the miner's song is used and processed into a powerful entry into the work. The first section (from bar 15) is intended to remind us of the light-heartedness and ease with which miners approach their hard day's work. In the following Vivace (bar 32), the hard work begins. The five-four time is very reminiscent of the main theme of the film "Mission Imposible" and, in connection with the melody of the miners' song "Glück auf, Glück auf, der Steiger kommt", is meant to symbolise the toil and plague of the miners. In the slow Larghetto (bar 63), peace and quiet return to the mine.
Precisely because work in the mine is very strenuous and dangerous, miners have a special sense of peace and quiet. This is what this calm, contemplative middle section is meant to express. It continues in the energetic Allegro (bar 96). Very dynamic and full of verve, the miners devote themselves to their tasks. Musically, the motifs and themes of the miners' song "Glück auf, Glück auf, der Steiger kommt" are used again. This song is used in many different registers and in a very varied, rhythmic form. The work is rounded off with the powerful introductory music that provides an energetic conclusion.
