Difficulty level 2+
Evaluation level of countries A1 (Austrian A level); D2 (German lower level)
Duration 3:20
Additional info/contents For this sweeping opening piece in the RUNDEL Series eXplora, Austrian composer Thomas Asanger chose the title “Break-Up”. In the context of the composition, this expression describes the break-up of old, obsolete structures and planning for a new beginning. In German language, the translation for break-up “Aufbruch” can have both meanings: breaking something up and leaving for something new. Asanger’s big inspiration was the remarkable spirit of optimism in the band music world. The younger generation is very enthusiastic about band music, breathing new life into the scene. Literature for winds has also changed much in the past 20 years, combining traditional and modern elements. There are many new and exciting pieces, especially for young bands. This is evident in the composition contest of the Österreichische Blasmusikjugend (The Austrian Wind Band Youth) designed to enhance the repertoire of original works for young bands. Thomas Asanger won the contest in the category BJ (easy to medium difficulty) with “Break-Up”, describing youthful enthusiasm for band music and the optimistic spirit of a new generation. He dedicates the light-hearted composition to the youth band of his hometown Perg.

Once upon a time there was a small village where brass music had a long tradition. People loved getting together and making music together. They had founded a brass band that performed at all village festivals and celebrations. The music was upbeat and uplifting and always made people dance and laugh.

But over time, interest in brass music began to wane. The younger generation had other interests and the older musicians became fewer and fewer. The brass band had difficulty recruiting new members and rehearsals were increasingly poorly attended. People began to worry that the brass band tradition might die out in their village.

One day a young conductor came to the village, or was it a female conductor? We don't know exactly anymore. In any case, the person had studied music and was enthusiastic about brass music. All villagers were spoken to and convinced that brass music was an important part of their culture and identity. Rehearsals and workshops were organized to encourage and motivate the musicians. And young people began to be inspired by brass music and integrated into the band.

The departure was not easy. There were many obstacles and setbacks. But they didn't give up. Hard work has been done to keep the tradition of brass music alive in the village and to pass it on to the next generation. And slowly but surely, things began to change. The rehearsals were better attended again, the band gained new members and the music became happier and more rousing again.

The people in the village were thrilled by the new energy and enthusiasm that existed in the brass band. They came back together to make music together and share their joy of making music. The brass band performed again at all village festivals and was loved and appreciated by everyone.

The departure was worth it. The brass music tradition in the village was saved and flourished again. People had learned that sometimes it is necessary to try something new and make changes to keep things alive. And so they lived happily and musically until the end of their lives.
