Composer Doss, Thomas
Difficulty level 4
Evaluation level of countries A4 (Austrian D level); EJ
Duration 7:50
Additional info/contents In this piece, we experience an exciting adventure in the jungle.
The entrance in the "green hill" turns out to be very changeable and dangerous. All sorts of pests, wild monkeys, and the roaring of elephants accompany our way through the dark thicket. Behind every tree there seems to be something lurking. All of a sudden, a horde of savage cannibals appears. A wild huntsets off and we escape at the last secund through a risky jump from a cliff into the saving water. Exotic birds welcome us in a new landscape and from somewhere in the distance we can hear a bamboo flute playing.
A waterfall lets the colors of the spectrum reflect in its spry as we slowly approach. We notice the flute is sounding louder and louder as we continue to walk to ward the waterfall. We find a peaceful native tribe inviting us to dance and sing. Moving along and trying to find our way back, we hear bush drums, promising no good to us. Again, we are the chased and finally we have to face the truth. This is a journey of no return...
The effects (elephants, wild monkeys, exotic birds, rain effects) should be produced with much creativity - individual ideas are always desirable and welcome.

The term “jungle” evokes immediate associations with a lush, wild environment. In music, the jungle is often used as a metaphorical landscape to describe a diverse and dynamic sound world. The composition "Jungle" by Thomas Doss is a fascinating example of the implementation of this concept in the world of brass music.

The term "jungle" in music refers to a tonal variety and unpredictability that is reminiscent of the complex structures and sounds of a natural jungle environment. This concept is often realized through the use of different instruments, rhythms and harmonies that are woven together to create a vibrant and diverse soundscape. The composition "Jungle" by Thomas Doss is an impressive example of how the concept of jungle can be implemented in music. The sounds of the different instrument groups are cleverly intertwined to create a dense and lively atmosphere that transports the listener into a musical wilderness.

"Jungle" is as complex in its structure as the jungle itself. From the concise rhythms of the percussion to the exotic melodies of the woodwinds and brass, the composition reflects the diversity of nature. The mood changes between quiet, mysterious passages and exciting, rhythmic sections that take the listener on an adventurous journey. The instrumental diversity enables Thomas Doss to fully exploit the sound spectrum of a wind orchestra. The percussion plays a central role in creating rhythmic jungle sounds, while the brass section captures the energy and character of this wild environment through their dynamic phrasing.

The dynamics of "Jungle" vary from subtle, atmospheric moments to powerful, rousing passages. This dynamic range helps convey the vibrant and unpredictable nature of the jungle. Thomas Doss cleverly uses the expressive palette of the wind orchestra to shape the various facets of this musical expedition.

“Jungle” by Thomas Doss is not just a composition, but a sonic journey of discovery into the world of the jungle. Translating the jungle concept into music allows the listener to experience the diversity, beauty and sometimes challenges of this wild environment. Through skillful use of instruments, rhythms and harmonies, Doss creates a musical journey that is both captivating and enriching. “Jungle” is an outstanding example of how nature can come to life in music.
