Den Text dieses Gradualgesangs vertonte Anton Bruckner mehrfach. Die 1884 entstandene Version zählt zu seinen eindringlichsten Vokalkompositionen und zeugt von der tiefen Frömmigkeit des Komponisten. In melodischen und dynamischen Extremen zeichnet Bruckner den Kontrast zwischen der Erniedrigung, die der Gottessohn am Kreuz erfährt, und der Erhöhung die ihm dadurch zuteil wird. Ausdrucksstark und vom Verständnis um die theologische Botschaft des Textes durchdrungen ist Bruckners Christus factus est von 1884 ein Meisterwerk romantischer Sakralmusik.
